A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James has won the 2015 Man Booker Prize.  Set in Kingston, Jamaica, where James was born, the book is a fictional history of the attempted murder of Bob Marley in 1976.

Pope Francis

Pope Francis has arrived in the United States and will soon make his way to Philadelphia this weekend. If you’re not planning to be part of the festivities (or traffic jams) in the city, you may be interested in learning and reading about this “modern” and humble pope. Three books worth considering are:

Pope Francis and the New Vatican by Dave Yoder

Pope Francis: A Photographic Portrait of the People’s Pope by Michael Collins

On Heaven and Earth: Pope Francis on faith, Family and the Church in the Twenty-First Century by Pope Francis

The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey

The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey by Rinker Buck, is an enjoyable history lesson (although I would prefer never to hear another story about mules again). In 2011, Rinker and his entertaining brother Nick literally hitch their covered wagon to three mules and travel the path of the Oregon Trail. Their passion for the history of the Oregon Trail and covered wagon travel is contagious and I learned many fascinating facts, including how difficult the trail could and can be. One of the nicest parts of the book is Rinker’s reflection on his relationship with his deceased father who was also an adventurer. Rinker captures the joy of travel; where every day holds something unknown and pushes you out of your comfort zone but eventually leaves you feeling energized and filled with joy and gratitude.

Does This Beach Make Me Look Fat?

With the unofficial end to summer around the corner, Does This Beach Make Me Look Fat? is a book to squeeze into your summer reading.  A collection of essays written by the mother/daughter team of Lisa Scottoline and Francesca Serritella (Philly natives btw), I laughed out loud many times and was touched by their stories of family. Give yourself a treat and read (or listen) to this book.  After you have finished, you will be thinking, as I did, how nice it would be have Lisa as your neighbor or better yet a friend!

Obama’s Reading List

President Obama is on vacation this week and is taking a few books with him.  I always find it interesting to see what people are reading-even when I’m walking on the beach!  If you are like me, see below to find out what the President of the United States will be reading on vacation this summer.

Washington: A Life by Ron Chernow

Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

The Sixth Extinction by Elizabeth Kolbert

The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri

All That Is by James Salter

Room – the movie

For those of you who were equally captivated and disturbed by Emma Donoghue’s best selling book Room, you might be interested to know the book has been made into a movie and will be in theaters mid-October.  Take a look at the trailer and if you haven’t read the book yet, it’s a worthwhile read.
